Gary Kampe and David Roberts were two men who, within a year of the June 26, 2015 U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage, became married. They had met back in 1978 in the legendary 'Factory' bar, and although they talked about marriage, they decided to wait until it was legal nationwide. On April 8, 2016, Gary and David were married in their Downtown Milwaukee home, surrounded by close friends, family and nearly four decades of shared memories.

Their story, and that of same-sex marriage, was told in a 2016 article in the 'OnMilwaukee' website by historian Michail Takach. "On the two-year anniversary of the historic Wisconsin ruling, Gary and David share their perspectives on the transformative power of marriage on not only long-term relationships, but LGBTQ society."
