Very little is known about The Mayfair Lounge. It is believed to have opened as early as 1961, as the earliest national gay bar guides all were listing it in 1963 and 1964 guides (Lavender Baedeker Guide, Vol. 1 No. 1, c1963; Guild Guide 1964, etc.) While it is believed to have initially been primarily straight, it obviously quickly became popular with gays and lesbians.

The Spartacus American Bicentennial Gay Guide (1976) described it as "More straight than gay and not as open as Gail's, this place is somewhat popular with the older crowd."

The history of LGBT bars in Northeastern Wisconsin was the subject of an excellent article in the Green Bay Press Gazette in 2020.

More information about this business is welcomed from anyone who can contribute it.
