Za's Historic West Theatre was another in a line of popular bars owned by Mark 'Za' Mariucci, who in addition to owning and running various Green Bay bars, was also active in various Pageants, and founded and published 'Quest' magazine, a Wisconsin LGBT periodical, for 25 years. Mark 'Za' had previously co-owned and operated Za's (at 720 Bodart Way) from 1989 thru 1990, and Za's Video Bar and Java lounge at 1106 Main Street from October 1991 to November 2000. But in April 2000, co-owner Ken Kujava of the Za's on Main Street died unexpectedly, and co-owner Mark 'Za' Mariucci was unable to reach an amicable settlement with Ken's estate. Za's bar and Quest magazine were forced to relocate by the end of 2000. Mariucci acquired the historic West Theatre building on Walnut Street and began work in October 2000 to move Za's there. Za's on Main was forced to close before the new location was open-- but Mariucci opened Za's Historical West Theatre, in February 2001. The history of LGBT bars in Northeastern Wisconsin was the subject of an excellent article in the Green Bay Press Gazette in 2020. More information about this business is welcome from anyone who can contribute same. |
